Simultaneous hydrogen sulfide removal and wastewater purification in a novel alum sludge-based odor-gas aerated biofilter

A novel alum sludge-based odor-gas aerated vertical flow biofilter (Al-OAF) was developed, which aims to removal the pollutants in wastewater and simultaneously eliminate H2S generated from treatment facility. Three lab-scale parallel columns were operated batch model while intermittently with 200 ppm (Al-OAF), air (Al-AF) unaerated (Al-F, as blank), respectively. The effluent concentration Al-OAF monitored regularly. Results showed that three presented a high efficiency (>98%) of total phosphorus (TP) completed (100%) Al-OAF. Al-AF could enhance chemical oxygen demand (COD) 94.3 ± 3.0, 94.8 1.9%, nitrogen (TN) 86.2 14.2, 91.6 5.4%, In particular, there no significant difference regarding COD, TN performances between “H2S driven” “air Al-AF. mechanism lies sludge ability adsorption reaction by biofilm biofilter. This demonstrates (aerated waste gas) would be promising “wise choice” for intensified dual-goals simultaneous purification elimination.
